Bill Kreutzmann grew up in Palo Alto and started playing drums at thirteen—an unusual choice given that a sixth-grade music teacher had told him he had no natural rhythm and couldn’t keep a beat. That flat assessment might have discouraged most young musicians, but Kreutzmann was undeterred. He practiced obsessively, developing his skills through sheer determination and repetition. His early influences came from R&B and rock and roll, drawing inspiration from artists who played with drive and groove.

A pivotal moment came during his high school years when Aldous Huxley, the renowned writer and psychonaut, unexpectedly walked into a space where Kreutzmann was practicing. Huxley listened to the teenager’s drumming and delivered a very different assessment than his grade-school teacher had: he told Kreutzmann he had never heard anything quite like what he was doing and encouraged him to continue. This validation from an unexpected quarter—a literary and cultural figure of Huxley’s stature—reinforced Kreutzmann’s confidence that despite what his teacher had said, he was onto something.

At Palo Alto High School, Kreutzmann drummed in the Legends, a popular R&B band that mixed James Brown songs with rock-and-roll hits of the day, playing Stanford fraternity parties and dances in East Palo Alto. He also filled in with the Zodiacs, a loose Palo Alto band that at times included Pigpen and Jerry Garcia, and he taught drum lessons at Swain’s House of Music.

When Garcia, Bob Weir and Pigpen decided to go electric at the end of 1964, Kreutzmann was the obvious choice for drummer. He played the Warlocks’ first show in May 1965 while still in high school, and he stayed with the Grateful Dead for its entire thirty-year run. His drumming was rooted in jazz and R&B but was flexible enough to follow the band anywhere. He was known for listening closely, changing tempo smoothly, and pushing a jam forward without crowding it.

In 1967 Kreutzmann met Mickey Hart and brought him into the band, creating the two-drummer lineup that became central to the Dead’s sound. Kreutzmann supplied the steady groove while Hart explored polyrhythms and world percussion, and together they built a layered, shifting rhythmic base unlike anything else in rock. Their nightly “Drums” segment became a fixture of Dead concerts, and their partnership, nicknamed the Rhythm Devils, lasted for decades.

After Garcia’s death in 1995, Kreutzmann stayed busy with a long list of projects, including Backbone, The Other Ones and The Dead, the Rhythm Devils with Hart, BK3, 7 Walkers with Papa Mali, and Billy & the Kids. He joined Dead & Company in 2015 and toured with them until 2023. His 2015 memoir, Deal: My Three Decades of Drumming, Dreams, and Drugs with the Grateful Dead, gives a frank account of the band from behind the kit. Away from music, he has worked on ocean conservation and digital art.

Kreutzmann believes the drummer’s job is to serve the song and the other players, driving the music while leaving room for it to breathe. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. He is the last surviving founding member of the Grateful Dead.
